Empty the basket before filling it
Set out the current toys on a clear surface and sort by the next action: ready to inspect, needs cleaning, or needs removal. This is a useful moment to notice duplicates and forgotten favourites. Keep damaged items out of reach while you decide how to dispose of them. A toy that has lost its purpose does not need to return to the basket simply because it was expensive. Resist adding a replacement automatically; check whether your dog still enjoys that kind of play.
Inspect the details, not just the shape
Check seams, openings and surfaces, along with anything that moves or makes noise. Look for changes since the last session: a split, a loose component, a missing piece or a rough edge. Humane World advises discarding toys that are torn or breaking into pieces, and supervising squeaky toys because a dog may try to reach the sound-making part. Put doubtful toys aside instead of treating the next session as an experiment. If a piece is missing and may have been swallowed, contact your vet.
Let the instructions choose the wash
Read the care label for the particular toy. Do not assume that every rubber toy can go in a dishwasher or every fabric toy can go in a washing machine. Check temperature limits, detergent guidance and whether components should be separated. If there are no usable instructions, contact the maker before applying a cleaning method. Rinse as directed and allow the item to dry fully before storage. Follow the manufacturer’s advice for food residue, including hard-to-reach recesses; a quick rinse may leave material behind.
Make the reset easy to repeat
Keep cleaned, dry toys in a different place from items awaiting attention. A small basket is easier to review than an overflowing one. Label a storage area for play styles if that helps other caregivers find an appropriate item, but never use a label as a replacement for inspection. Add a check column to your rotation plan and leave room for what you noticed. The point is to reduce uncertainty: everyone can see which toy is ready, which needs work and which is no longer available. Review again before each session, since yesterday’s check cannot describe today’s wear.
